UNSPECIFIC OBJECT - Top 09site specific installation, Hängende Gärten, Vienna, A, 2004 As part of the "Hängende Gärten" (Hanging Gardens) project artists from different fields were invited to place interventions in empty apartments in a new building. Pfaffenbichler/Schreiber installed an oversized table in a 90 square meter apartment which almost filled the entire living space. Only a small gap was left between the table and the walls. The floor plan was precisely recreated, in a somewhat smaller size, and lifted to the height of an ordinary table. A table is symbol for social activities, a place to eat together, to communicate, to play, etc. Because of the horizontal expansion of this table, using the apartment in a normal way is impossible. The object is extremely impractical and off-putting. As a result of the change it has lost all function. It is a caricature, a monster. The sculpture has a parasitic relationship with the surrounding space, the form is defined by the interior of the "host" object. And so the form is unspecific; in a different apartment the object would have a different shape. The audience has to move along the apartmentÅfs outer edges to inspect the installation. The space in which the viewer can move is predetermined and extremely limited.
