As part of the "Hängende Gärten" (Hanging Gardens) project artists from different fields were invited to place interventions in empty apartments in a new building. Pfaffenbichler/Schreiber installed an oversized table in a 90 square meter apartment which almost filled the entire living space. Only a small gap was left between the table and the walls. The floor plan was precisely recreated, in a somewhat smaller size, and lifted to the height of an ordinary table.

A table is symbol for social activities, a place to eat together, to communicate, to play, etc. Because of the horizontal expansion of this table, using the apartment in a normal way is impossible. The object is extremely impractical and off-putting. As a result of the change it has lost all function. It is a caricature, a monster.

The sculpture has a parasitic relationship with the surrounding space, the form is defined by the interior of the "host" object. And so the form is unspecific; in a different apartment the object would have a different shape. The audience has to move along the apartmentÅfs outer edges to inspect the installation. The space in which the viewer can move is predetermined and extremely limited.
