Interactive Animations: notes on color
The basis for these interactive experiments is a computer operating system´s 8-bit color palette (with 256 colors). Influenced by a constructivist "aesthetic of the given," the color grid has not been altered. The viewer/user is provided with an opportunity to explore the animated palettes by means of the keyboard and test the characteristics and effects of colors with analytically and serially compiled color oppositions and specific mixing systems. Rather than completed, prefabricated images, two programs are presented, and they enable the creation of a vast number of image updates according to extremely simple rules and combinatorial laws.
Relief: notes on scape
The monochrome relief, neither image nor sculpture, becomes part of the space that it inscribes. The shape and proportions of the exhibition space define the basic parameters for the spatial application. In the case of the MUWA (Museum of Perception) we worked with the octagonal pillar in the center of the second floor. Its eight sides reflect the principle employed for construction of the systematic variation of a square: Based on the bit system, the foundation of every digital computer system, 28 combinations of 0 and 1 (blank space and shape) were attached to the walls. Each of the 256 eight-digit rows is intended to be read from left to right, and circling the pillar once represents a complete variation.
